Barrier cream: what it is and why it can't be missing in your beauty kit

There is one thing that all celebrities agree on: the barrier cream is a beauty ally to protect your skin not only in winter but all year round.

But what exactly are we talking about? Of those face creams that act on the skin like a real shield, restructuring the epidermis and strengthening it. This is not something absolutely new, indeed it is probable that you are already using it but if not ... better to fix it immediately!

What is Barrier Cream?

What is barrier cream?

As we have said, the barrier cream is an emulsion capable of protecting the skin in any situation. If the cold can cause redness and irritation, our skincare can also sensitize the skin, especially if we use aggressive exfoliating products. And this is where our barrier cream comes into play, perfect for preserving the hydrolipidic film of the skin, stimulating the healing process, protecting against irritants – as well as atmospheric ones, of course – and preventing skin dehydration. In short, a real life-saving cream when the skin needs some extra attention.

If you are already imagining very heavy formulas, stop now! Barrier creams, in fact, are rapidly absorbed and capable of giving immediate relief .

Barrier cream vs moisturizer: what are the differences?

Barrier cream vs moisturizer: what are the differences?

Traditional face creams, thanks to their composition, keep the skin hydrated all day long but act exclusively on the epidermis, i.e. the outermost layer of the skin, while barrier creams penetrate deeper and restore the skin's hydrolipidic film. Their composition is enriched with active ingredients and/or occlusive and humectant functional substances, so as to be insoluble in contact with water and preserve skin hydration as much as possible.

In fact, these creams may contain glycerin, hyaluronic acid, allantoin, sorbitol but also glycerin, zinc oxide, ceramides and squalane.

If this doesn't seem new to you, that's right, everything reminds in a less extreme way the slugging trend , depopulated on TikTok a few months ago, or its new rival, slicking .

When should barrier cream be used?

When should barrier cream be used?

In addition to being perfect for use in winter and in the change of seasons, the barrier cream is ideal if you have dry or dehydrated skin or if you suffer from certain skin problems such as eczema, dermatitis, etc.

In particular, if your skin type is very sensitive and reactive, we recommend using a barrier face cream every night, so as to protect it as much as possible and restore it overnight. If your skin is mixed or oily, don't think you don't have to use it: all skins need hydration!

How can you fit it into your routine

How can you fit it into your routine

In winter and during seasonal changes, use the barrier cream in the morning and evening as the last step of your skincare.

Depending on your skin type, cleanse the skin with a moisturizing or purifying cleanser, proceed by applying the tonic , eye contour and face serum that best suits your needs and seal everything with the barrier cream. As we have said, in fact, after applying this type of formula, no other product can be absorbed!

In the summer, use this type of product as part of your evening beauty routine (always as the last step) and/or in all those moments when your skin needs to be restored and some extra attention.
